Meet James Johnson
James Johnson, a man of 24 years, had all his heart’s desires fulfilled. His wife, perfect in every way, was the love of his life. They lived together in a dream apartment that he always longed for, situated in Brooklyn, New York. His job too, was fantastic, making his life pretty great.
James was pinching himself with how fortune had favored him. He’d always yearned to be a city dweller, sharing his life with the one he adored, and remarkably, everything seemed to have fallen into place seamlessly. Unbeknownst to him, his picture-perfect life was heading for a grand upheaval.
College Romance
James first met Alexa six years ago during a class called Introduction to Film Studies in his starting year of college, he immediately knew she was special. It was his initial class in college and his nerves were on edge. Yet when he scanned the room filled with unfamiliar faces and saw Alexa seated right next to him, a comforting calmness washed over him.
Not long after getting to know each other, James and the girl formed a lovely bond that swiftly morphed into friendship. However, this was not enough for James. After several weeks of getting to know her better, he gathered his courage and asked her to be his girlfriend. True to his hopes, her answer was a resounding yes. They instantly stuck to each other like glue, little did they know that they were soon going to confront some hefty hurdles in their relationship journey. Their joy was boundless and profound, but unknowingly, they were on the verge of facing some tough challenges that lay ahead.
First Love
Despite facing many difficulties, James and Alexa didn’t give up on each other. They remained together throughout their entire four years of college. Whenever challenges arose, they found comfort and support in their companionship, knowing they could rely on each other.
Following the completion of their education, fortune smiled upon them as they were both able to secure gainful employment pretty quickly. James found a position teaching history, while Alexa pursued her career in sales with a beauty product firm. In no time, they had accumulated enough savings to make the leap out of their parents’ living spaces and start sharing their own apartment in Brooklyn. Life had fallen into place perfectly for the pair, paving the way for them to move forward to the next stage in their relationship.
Tying the Knot
After being in a relationship for five wonderful years, James felt it was finally time to pop the question to Alexa. Happily, she responded with a resounding yes. A few months went by quickly, and soon enough, they were surrounded by their loved ones and closest friends at a beautiful but small ceremony, exchanging their wedding vows.
As James and his new wife shared their first kiss as husband and wife, he felt like the luckiest man alive. Uttering their vows and saying “I do” was simple. However, they were unaware that they were about to confront the most significant challenge their relationship would ever face.
One Year Anniversary
James and Alexa adjusted smoothly to their new roles as a married couple. Before they even realized it, their first year of marriage was almost up, and their first wedding anniversary was just around the corner.
James was well aware how important this occasion was. It was their first year as a married couple, and he wanted to make it special for Alexa to emphasize her significance in his life. Yet, as he was contemplating the perfect anniversary gift, he couldn’t help but notice a change in Alexa’s behavior, which seemed a bit odd to him.
Alexa’s Behavior
In the recent weeks, Alexa’s behavior had changed quite a bit. She was on her phone a lot more than usual and often returned from work later than before. Even more, she was showing signs of being easily annoyed. All of this made James wonder if Alexa was keeping something from him.
At first, he chose to turn a blind eye, believing that Alexa was just under the weather because of her job. However, as time passed, things continued to get more odd, and it became impossible to ignore his instincts. He was certain that something was off. After all, Alexa had never behaved like this in the past.
Taking Baths
Alexa began arriving home from her job later than usual, hardly ever before 7:30 p.m. That wasn’t what was most odd, though. As soon as she got home each evening, she would rush to the bathroom for a bath. She hardly had time to exchange a simple hello with James before she would shut and lock the bathroom door. Strangely enough, she would always take her handbag with her into the bathroom.
Whenever she took her baths, it almost seemed like she was taking hours in the bathtub. James was truly puzzled about what could be happening inside that kept her so long. He was curious as to why she always chose to bathe immediately after returning from her job.
Needing Answers
Understandably, James’ thoughts started to whirl. He found himself asking an abundance of questions. Had she lost her job? Was the love she used to have for him still there? Could she be seeing someone else? He needed to make sense of what was going on before his mind continued to imagine the worst possible scenarios.
James was persistently bothered by a nagging suspicion that something was off with his wife. Driven by his need to figure out the uncomfortable uncertainty, he devised a clear strategy.
Knocking on the Door
Just like how a clock is regular, Alexa came home from her job the next day and, without wasting any time or even setting down her handbag, she dashed off to the restroom. This time, she was in such a hurry that she didn’t even glance at James as she scurried past him to get to the bathroom.
James was tormented by uncertainty-he was haunted by the gloomiest thoughts. His hand thumped on the bathroom door as he nervously asked, “Babe, are you okay.” The reply from Alexa was swift, “I’m fine, I’m just trying to relax.” The brevity of her answer only cemented his suspicion that all was not well. Unbeknownst to him, his hunch was dead on.
Not Giving Up
James was really puzzled about what was happening with his wife. Had the chemistry they once enjoyed lost its glow? They were already together for six years, much of that time was spent as students in college. Could it be that what they had was merely a youthful affair? Did they still harbor feelings of love for each other? This was what James needed to figure out.
He wasn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. He was aware he needed to figure out a way to sneak into the bathroom and carry out a secret investigation, all the while ensuring that Alexa remained oblivious. The perfect chance for him would come when Alexa wrapped up her nightly bath ritual and retreated to bed. However, even with all his planning, he couldn’t possibly have imagined what he was about to discover there.
Closer Look
The moment he was certain that Alexa had fallen into a deep sleep, James snuck towards the bathroom. At a first glance, it appeared quite mundane, but then, something caught his eye. There seemed to be a tiny, nearly invisible hole tucked away in the corner.
Feeling an urge to investigate further, James moved cautiously toward the mysterious opening. He chose to align his gaze with it, peeking in. The shocking sight that met his eyes stirred something deep within him.
Inside the Hole
James was struggling to trust his own eyes. Was he being tricked by what he was seeing? There, tucked away in the small hole, was a miniature spy camera. How on earth did a camera find its way into their bathroom? And why was his wife spending such long periods in there?
James knew he needed to check what was on the camera. But how could he watch the footage without getting Alexa involved? Is that why she had been focused on her phone so often over the past few weeks? Could that be the reason?
Another Bath
When the sun rose, James’ mind was still consumed by the contents of the camera. His sleep had been restless, marked by constant shifting and turning. Alexa, on the other hand, seemed undisturbed-her sleep was calm and uninterrupted. When it was time for her to go to work, she hardly exchanged more than a couple of words with James. It seemed like she hadn’t noticed anything amiss.
That evening, when Alexa got back from her job and dashed off to the bathroom, James figured he needed to understand what was happening. Rather than just hanging about in confusion, he chose to press his ear against the door. Suddenly, he heard her giggling and another peculiar sound that he couldn’t immediately identify.
Going In
James had finally reached his limit! The odd behavior was getting too much for him and it was driving him up the wall. Taking a deep breath, he approached the bathroom door, not at all expecting it to yield. Much to his surprise, this time, the door was not locked.
Tentatively, he stepped in, his eyes scanning the room fearfully, scared of what he might find. His mind was filled with the direst of thoughts. Seeing the sheer terror painted on Alexa’s face, he was certain his worst fears were not unfounded. It seemed her concealed secret was on the brink of being exposed.
Was She Unhappy?
James couldn’t say a word, he was stunned. How could she behave like this towards him? Didn’t she consider the pain this would bring him? His most frightening nightmares had just become his reality. He couldn’t believe it; was he living his worst fear?
Feelings of sorrow rushed over him, causing tears to stream down his cheeks. He found it hard to catch his breath. Could it be possible that he overlooked the clues of his wife’s dissatisfaction? His mind was consumed by thoughts of how he could have acted differently. As he gently wiped away his tears, his gaze wandered over to Alexa who was settled in the bath. There was an undeniable suspicion that she was concealing something.
Hiding Something
“Alexa asked, with a tone of panic in her voice, “What’s going on?” She saw no way out – she had to reveal her truth.”
Before James had a chance to say anything, he caught sight of a figure shifting in the water. To his shock, he realized that Alexa wasn’t the only one in the tub. Could this actually be happening? He wasn’t completely sure if he was ready to discover who the additional person in the tub was. As if things couldn’t get any more complicated, this situation went from bad to even worse.
Tiny Head
Just as James was getting ready to quiz Alexa about the strange happenings, a tiny head emerged from the water. James glanced at the small creature, baffled by what he was witnessing. He was struggling to digest the reality of the sight in front of him. He simply could not believe it.
Next, he slid into a spot right next to the tub, his gaze fixed on the large green eyes returning his stare. He stood on the brink of tears, struggling to comprehend what his eyes were showing him.
Every Possibility
In the past several weeks, every conceivable situation played out in his mind. Could it be that Alexa had found someone else she loved? Was she preparing to walk out on him? Yet, none of these ideas seemed to fit the actual situation.
In the bubble bath, his wife Alexa was seated, cuddling a little brown tabby kitten. James couldn’t help but wonder, why was she cradling a cat? He had always imagined owning a cat but was filled with queries. His dream was unfolding, yet why now and under such circumstances remained a mystery.
Tiny Kitten
Once Alexa noticed that James was feeling more at ease, her laughter began to fill the room again. Carefully, she lifted the tiny kitten from the water, positioning it in a way for James to see better. The sight of Alexa showing such gentle affection for his most adored creature brought joy to James. It was comforting to see her finally in a state of pure relaxation and cheerfulness.
Even though James was surprised by her strange actions these past couple of weeks, he knew he needed to understand why. It was finally time for him to hear the answers.
Surprise!
“At last, James found the courage to inquire, “Why are you holding a cat?” Alexa’s face beamed with a smile as she replied, “It’s a lovely surprise. Don’t you think?” There was an unmistakable thrill in her voice as she declared, “Love, this is my anniversary present to you,” barely containing her excitement.
For as long as he could remember, James had always desired a cat. Yet, he knew very well that Alexa was more partial to dogs. While he certainly appreciated the thoughtful gift that was presented, James found himself with numerous questions still lingering in his mind.
Lots of Questions
Why had she been acting so grumpy? What was the reason for her spending so much time in the bathroom? What was the need for her to work such long hours? How come there was a secret spy camera hidden in their bathroom? But the biggest mystery of all was, how on earth did she manage to sneak a cat into their home without him realizing?
Before James could even formulate his queries, Alexa was already grabbing two towels from the hanger – one for herself and another one useful for the kitten. She handed over the towel and the tiny feline to James who promptly started patting the wet fur dry, creating a sense of everything else dissolving away. However, Alexa was not in the clear just yet. There were still numerous questions left unanswered and she had a substantial amount of clarifications to offer.
